Newly independent India needed to establish a sound technical basis for proper industrial advancement of the country and a number of Engineering Institutions were established by several State Governments, Mr. Chinnaswami Rajam, with his characteristic pioneering spirit, patriotic fervor and unwavering enthusiasm came up with a munificent donation of Rs. 5 lakhs through the sale of his house and founded the MIT, with the blessings of the Sage of Kanchi, the Jagadguru Sankaracharya Swamigal. In this noble effort, Mr.Rajam enjoyed the inspired assistance of a few distinguished citizens, notably Subbaraya Aiyar, M.K. Ranganathan, L.Venkatakrishna Iyer, K.Srinivasan and C.R. Srinivasan and also generous donations from the public and industries.

The Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai imparts advanced-level courses and undertakes research programmes in technical areas. Admission to all the MIT courses is managed by the Centre for Admissions (CFA). MIT Chennai offers BE/B.Tech degree is based on the scores of class 12th whereas an entrance exam is required for MIT Chennai PG courses. The placement process for graduate and undergraduate students of MIT Chennai is coordinated by the Madras Institute of Technology's (MIT) Placement Cell. It is a part of Anna University's Centre for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC). Through active collaboration with numerous sectors, MIT Chennai Placement cell offers students progressive placement and internship options. Additionally, it provides career counselling and plans skill-development initiatives in collaboration with businesses. With activities like pre-placement sessions, mock interviews and group discussions, the placement cell improves the personality of the candidate.
For the year 2021-2022, MIT's average package has been between Rs 6 lakhs to Rs 10 lakhs. For the MIT Chennai Placements 2023, the placement cell will continue to conduct training sessions for students in an effort to bring MIT’s lowest package higher than the previous years.

Transportation services, including well-maintained buses with defined routes, ensure convenient commuting for students and staff. Laboratory facilities across departments are outfitted with modern tools and equipment, providing students with hands-on learning experiences.
